The instrument and its sounds
The handpan is a brass instrument played with the hands. All variants of this melodic instrument, which is a percussion idiophone, consist of two connected sheet steel bowls with several tone fields in the upper bowl. This type of instrument was inspired by the steel pan from Trinidad and the clay pot ghatam from South India.
The gentle sound of the handpan is enchanting, and Jonas Straumann is a passionate handpan player, despite or perhaps because of his near deafness. He plays the instrument with great sensitivity and transports your guests to a different state of consciousness.
An exceptional musician
Jonas Straumann was born with a hearing impairment bordering on deafness. His love of music awoke very early and he began playing various percussion instruments at a young age. He tried out various instruments. He kept hearing from those around him: "You can't do that, you're hearing impaired." And so he stopped making music in 2013.
The discovery of the handpan
When he discovered the handpan in 2018, Jonas Straumann found his passion again. He soon began performing as a street musician and touched the hearts of passers-by with his music. Today, the hearing-impaired handpan player captivates audiences at all kinds of events with a sparkling mix of compositions and improvisation.
